        Serian district has a total population of 92,200 people, mostly followed by the Bidayuh and Iban, Malay, Chinese and others. Serian district famed for its rich agriculture. This is because the main income of the rural population in this area is agricultural products such as rice, oil palm, cocoa, pepper, rubber, fruits and vegetables. Besides agriculture, the inhabitants of the Serian district also involved in the rearing of pigs, cattle, chicken, fish and lamb as well as fishing on the river. Serian district residents are no exception involved with the activities of business and trade. In line with the government's mission to create a community of active and progressive in business and trade activities, as well as actively engaged in agriculture and industry.

       The most popular agriculture activities in Serian is "Empurau Breeding" in Tarat Agriculture Station. According to Bernama (2011),  Sarawak is capable of producing about four million empurau (mahseer) fish fry within five years through cooperation in research and development (R&D) with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI).

      “The empurau fish, also known as kelah in the peninsula, is an exotic fish with a high market value of around RM800 per kilogram while in China, a live empurau can fetch the equivalent of RM1,200 per kg,”
